Generally yes, as long as your water chemistry is properly balanced. Smoke particles settling on the water are not a major health risk to swimmers once your sanitizer is doing its job. The bigger concern is air quality. If the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is high in your area, limiting outdoor exertion (including swimming) is wise, especially for children, seniors, and anyone with respiratory conditions. Before swimming, always confirm your pH is between 7.2–7.6 and Free Chlorine is at least 3.0 ppm. If your water is cloudy, green, or your chlorine reading is near zero, stay out until the water is rebalanced.
Yes. Covers help significantly, but they aren’t airtight. Microscopic soot and fine ash particles can drift in around the edges every time the cover is opened, and residue sitting on top of the cover can wash into the pool with rain or when the cover is removed. If you use a cover during smoke events, rinse or sweep it off before opening it, and continue testing your water regularly. A covered pool still needs monitoring. It just needs less frequent skimming.
This is called high chlorine demand, and it’s the most common wildfire-related complaint we hear. Free chlorine is consumed as it oxidizes organic material, and smoke fallout delivers a constant stream of carbon soot and burnt debris into your water. During heavy smoke, a full dose of chlorine can be used up in a single afternoon. The fix: physically remove as much debris as possible (skim, brush, vacuum, empty baskets), run your filtration longer, and maintain elevated Free Chlorine of 3.0–5.0 ppm. During wildfire season, a phosphate remover is one of the smartest additions to your routine. Wood smoke and ash are rich in orthophosphates(the primary nutrient algae feed on). Chlorine kills algae, but it doesn’t remove their food supply, so when smoke drives your chlorine down and phosphates up at the same time, you get the perfect conditions for a rapid green algae bloom. Removing phosphates takes the fuel out of the equation, so even if your chlorine dips temporarily, algae have far less to grow on. Pair it with a weekly preventative algaecide for the best protection.
Watch your pressure gauge. Once filter pressure climbs 8–10 PSI above your normal operating baseline, it’s time to backwash a sand filter or rinse a cartridge filter. Fine carbon soot passes straight through skimmer baskets and coats filter media much faster than ordinary debris, so during heavy smoke you may need to clean your filter every few days instead of every few weeks. Ignoring a clogged filter reduces circulation flow, which means soot stays suspended in the water, chemistry becomes harder to balance, and your pump works harder than it should which is potentially shortening equipment life. If pressure keeps spiking soon after cleaning, a deep filter clean or cartridge replacement may be needed; our service team can help.
It is best to leave your pool cover on to act as a physical barrier against falling ash, leaves, and heavy soot. However, you must manage it carefully. Fine ash sitting on top of the cover can easily slip into the water when opened or get washed in by rain. Before retracting or removing your cover, hose down the top surface and sweep away dry debris. Additionally, avoid leaving solar blankets on for prolonged periods without venting, as trapped gases combined with fluctuating pH can degrade the blanket material.
When dealing with heavy ash fallout, unstabilized liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) or calcium hypochlorite (cal-hypo) is generally recommended over stabilized shock powders (dichlor/trichlor). Wildfire smoke requires frequent, heavy dosing to overcome extreme chlorine demand. Using stabilized products repeatedly can quickly drive up your Cyanuric Acid (stabilizer/CYA) levels, leading to “chlorine lock” where your sanitizer becomes ineffective regardless of how much you add. Yes, if left untreated. Alkaline wood ash sitting on the bottom of your pool can cause localized surface staining on vinyl liners and rough, discolored scale on plaster finishes. Furthermore, fine carbon soot that bypasses filtration can accumulate inside heating elements and pump seals, causing abrasive wear. To protect your investment, brush pool surfaces daily during heavy smoke, maintain a balanced pH (7.2–7.6) to prevent scale, and perform a deep filter chemical soak once the smoke clears to flush out embedded carbon oils.
