
History
The area now known as Bearspaw was originally inhabited by the Niitsitapi, or Blackfoot nation, which comprises four tribes: Siksika, Piegan Blackfeet, Piikani Nation, and Kainai (Blood Indians).
In 1909, the Canadian Pacific Railway established a station here, naming it Bearspaw in honour of Chief Masgwaahsid, also known as Bear’s Paw, a leader of the Stoney Nakoda Nation and a signatory of Treaty No. 7 in 1877.
